Boker Pearl Scale Tang 6/8 Straight Razor
Note from Phil: I cannot stress enough how incredibly beautiful this piece of art is. This sings on the stones and sounds like burnt toast against your cheeks. Truly a Zen like shave!! But the part that is most amazing is the Mother of Pearl tang. Boker has out done themselves, as there are no equals in the modern day.
In the good old days, even serial-manufactured goods for everyday use put a premium on little details and an overall aesthetic approach. Today, this beautiful virtue has mainly fallen victim to cost-cutting and a fast-paced society. Only a few are unreasonable enough to ignore these practical economic constraints. In the 1906 catalogue, many straight razors were offered with a "Pearl Scale Tang".
For this feature, two thin scales of natural materials, e.g. mother-of-pearl or camel bone, are affixed to the tapered tang. Using various sanding belts, the natural material is manually leveled to fit the tang until a seamless, elegant joint is formed. This process must be handled very delicately to protect the precious natural material from damage. The result is a tang that is pleasantly smooth and warm to the touch and has a sophisticated, nostalgic look. In our manufactory, we were able to recreate the difficult combination of thinly ground tang and perfectly fitted mother-of-pearl scales.
The special blade finish of the straight razors with pearl scale tang also sets these razors apart from the rest of our product range. Being an utterly fascinating material, steel has a natural silky shine that is fully brought out by gentle polishing. Comes with historic packaging and a certificate of authenticity.
This variation of the 6/8" blade has handle scales of stabilized bog oak. Oak trunks are found in bogs, swamps, on riverbanks and lake shores, where they have been submerged for several centuries or even millennia. The tang with real mother-of-pearl scales creates an appealing contrast to the dark bog oak. The square point blade with a double line has an extra hollow grind with a ridge. The spine has fine laser engraving.
Like any other razor sold by The Classic Edge Shaving Store this razor is professionally honed to "shave ready" by Phil, we do this because the standard factory edge is not sharp enough to shave with out of the box. This $35 Value is our way of showing you that we are willing to take our Customer Service to the next level. After all nothing is worse than buying a Straight Razor as a gift for a loved one and when they open the box realize that they now have to send it away to be sharpened before they can use it.
Please allow a minimum of at least 3 - 4 business days for us to prepare your Straight Razor, as this is not just a product that you buy just anywhere. It needs special attention to detail as it will come in contact with your skin and must be sanitized and polished, followed by a coating of Renaissance Wax. Would you rather a shaving store that will rush your razor out the next morning or a Artisan owned shaving store that is extreme when it comes to making their clients 100% satisfied. It's our job to insure your experience is perfect, and if not perfect it's our job to correct any mistakes as soon as possible. We cannot thank you enough for visiting our website and hope you have a great day.
Note: When you receive the razor for the first time take it out of the box and remove the oil with a piece of tissue, the razor has already been stropped and it completely "Shave Ready", so go ahead and shave. You will get 2 - 3 shaves before needing to strop. Each time you have used your razor, rinse the blade with hot tap water. Carefully and thoroughly dry the blade and in between the scales with a piece of tissue paper before you close it. If you intend to leave your razor unused for several days, oil the blade using a Straight Razor oil to protect the surface from moisture and humidity. To maintain a sharp cutting edge, strop regularly prior to shaving.
Since the beginning of the Boker manufacturing plant in 1869, high quality straight razors were produced in Solingen, Germany. At that time, they were already focused on the usage of nothing less than the best in materials, and it was of the utmost importance to maintain the highest production standards available. With that background, the success came quickly, and this gave Boker straight razors an impeccable international reputation. After World War II, the manufacturing of straight razors gradually came to a stop. Today, an original Boker catalog from 1906 is the oldest document in our archives about the razor blade product line of that time. More than 100 years later, a new lineup is being manufactured in Solingen, reviving the old tradition. Through 170 individual production steps, the new and exclusive Boker straight razors are created. A guarantor for the highest quality is the successful "finger nail test". Only the edge of a perfectly ground blade can be visibly bent on your thumbnail and returns immediately to its original shape when released. Cheap blades are too thick to do this, and for that reason they are refered to as "axes" by the experts.
